Since we formed in early 2000, the council has applied for several grants. Here is a summary.
In August 2000, we asked Pacific Watershed Associates (PWA) to submit a planning grant that would look at erosion sources in the watershed. The grant was awarded for around $54K. Landowners of about 80 % of the land in watershed signed up. PWA contractors started work in early 2002 and conducted an extensive assessment of roads on the land of willing landowners. PWA did not go on or report on roads located on parcels of owners who did not sign up. The final report is due March 31, 2003. Specific recommendation for participating land owners will be passed directly to them. A more generic summary (without specifics of each parcel) will be included in the final report due 31 March 2003. We will use that report to seek funding for willing landowners to participate in upgrading their roads.
In 2001, we submitted a grant through the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) for funding to complete a Watershed Restoration Plan. We qualified but did not get funding.
We also submitted a second grant through the RWQCB for a Watershed Restoration Plan in early 2002. We qualified but did not get funding.
In May 2002, we submitted another grant with CDFG and just received word that we were approved for a grant for $26,420 to help us complete our Watershed Restoration Plan. We signed the contract in August 2003 and have hired CSUMB Watershed Institute and Biologist Nikki Nedeff to do the science work. The plan should be completed by the end of 2004. We will use the restoration plan to better manage or land and also to submit grants to implement cooperative programs that will improve habitat for the steelhead and improve the quality of our drinking water.
In May 2002, we asked PWA to submit a grant for approximately $350K to upgrade about 11 miles of roads and retire about 1 mile of old, unused roads. The goal is to make the roads easier to maintain and reduce impacts to our creek. We qualified but did not receive funding.
We are resubmitted a grant proposals to CDFG in 2003 for about $390K to upgrade about 13 miles of roads and retire about 1.5 miles. It was submitted on 9 May 2003; we should know whether we got it by January 2004.

The Garrapata Creek Watershed Council's Planning Group will take the lead on the Watershed Restoration Plan and will seek funding for future restoration projects. The Planning Group meets monthly. Click here for the schedule of the next meeting.
