Meeting Notes
Present: Charly Kleissner, Martha Diehl, Molly Williams, Ken Ekelund,
Carol Fisch, Sally Taylor, Bill Nelson, Gary Collings, Lynn Overtree
Action items are in bold.
UPDATES:
Martha:
Watershed Info Exchange will
be March 20, 3pm at Carol Fischs house. We are hosting. Subject will be the General
Plan Update.
Martha has, on a personal level, instigated the county to get a
PWA survey of Old Coast Road with Martys money. Marty is receptive.
Charly:
PWA
came through to analyze DFG property.
They
winterized the roads. At Fish Fry, theyve had 19 of rain this season.
He
is planning to do some research on membership
options.
They
will be doing a private assessment with PWA in the near future on a road section that hasnt
been assessed yet.
Gary:
Carmel River Watershed Council is doing a fundraiser on March
17th golf tournament, dinner and auction. Everyones encouraged to
support.
Viable seed is confirmed for Cape ivy. Two sites reported in
the CNPS newsletter were Gibson Creek and San Jose Creek.
Sally:
She is in the process of doing the taxes.
Molly:
Cape ivy update they have received a lot of seed
contributions and found viable seed from throughout the state. This has caused the
expansion of the research in South Africa to biocontrols that attack the seeds, as well as
the leaves.
Lets have Joe
Balciunus talk at one of our next General Meetings and solicit funds.
We already have a couple of diseases that affect it here.
Ken:
He will be meeting with
Dave Passovoy tomorrow to learn how State Parks is handling their exotic species.
Science is moving ahead. The stream gage is now six months old.
Marty gave us Caroline McKnight, a new DFG staff person, to habitat type the creek from the lagoon to the top
of steelhead access, probably the Westerns property. They will measure many
features of the creek throughout. It should take two weeks.
The next step is a fish study. DFG will electrofish the pools. The mortality rate is
0.05%. Any mortalities go to the NMFS lab.
We will eventually use
all this, and more, to form a watershed assessment. We will follow the format of DFGs
Salmonid Restoration Manual. Ken needs help developing this document.
Watershed Info Exchange Keep encouraging people to
participate. It is an excellent way to network with other watershed people and agency
people.
Bank Account We
need more money. It is time for a plea. We need to keep $1200 in our account to cover
the replacement stream gage for CSUMB. We are left with $400 in the account.
We will probably submit a grant application to Marty for
$250,000 in May for implementation of the plan.
Where are we going?
Following are some ideas. Discuss
it further over email before the next meeting.
Molly It is encouraging that info is coming back saying that creek is in good
condition. Continue getting the info, then monitor our activities. Exotic plants. At some
point we need to discuss recycling and trash control. Stay together as a community through
the council.
- Gary With
Cape ivy becoming such a threat, there may be some money funneled into exotic control.
- Charly get
residents involved in forming a strategic plan
- Carol
Disaster response plan
- Martha
Mid-Coast Fire Brigade
In summary:
- Education
- Roads
- Exotics
- Trash control
- Work with
Mid-Coast Fire Brigade on brush control
- Disaster
coordination floods, earthquakes, fires
- Watershed
assessment
- 3-year strategic
plan for the watershed
Build a relationship with the Mid-Coast Fire Brigade. Perhaps have
them be a speaker in May on Disaster preparedness.
